Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her persistent struggle to restore democracy in Venezuela. The announcement was the highlight of the Nobel awards week and was made at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo.
Machado was chosen from a competitive field of 338 nominees, including 244 individuals and 94 organizations. The prize includes 11 million Swedish kronor (about $1.2 million), a gold medal, and a diploma, to be awarded on December 10, the anniversary of founder Alfred Nobel’s death.
The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese group of atomic bomb survivors campaigning against nuclear weapons.
United States President Donald Trump was a prominent nominee for this year’s prize and had repeatedly claimed he deserved it for his role in stopping wars. In response to the selection, the White House stated the Nobel Committee chose “politics over peace.” Other major contenders for the 2025 prize included Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms and the Committee to Protect Journalists.
